Chevy to build 2018 Chevrolet Chevelle, 2018 Chevy Chevelle
The last time Chevy had a five-passenger car for sale with over 400 horsepower it was named the Chevrolet Chevelle and it packed the 450-gross horsepower punch of the LS6 big-block. Starting in the fourth-quarter of 2017, you'll be able to purchase its spiritual successor, the 2018 Chevrolet Chevelle , a V-8-powered, rear drive sedan with 415 net horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It's Chevy's first V-8/RWD sedan since the '96 Caprice and Impala SS, finally filling a void in the lineup that was a real sore spot for Bow Tie enthusiasts.
"The Chevrolet Chevelle brand was largely built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it's been 17 years since we've offered one," said president of General Motors North America. "The all-new 2018 Chevrolet Chevelle fills that void and fills it better than any other vehicle in the brand's rich history. The comfort, convenience, spaciousness and V-8 power makes the 2018 Chevelle a total performance package unlike any other on the road today."
According to Chevy, the SS "benefits from the proven, race-tested, global rear-wheel drive architecture that is the foundation for the Camaro, Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle and Holden's VF Commodore." Essentially an updated version of the ill-fated Pontiac G8, it will go head-to-head in the modern muscle car wars with Dodge's hot Hemi Charger. It should easily slap around a lot of the Eurotrash sports sedans that currently pollute our nation's highways and byways.
Power comes from the Chevy 6.2L LS3 and it's mated solely to a six-speed 6L80-E automatic transmission with paddle-shifts mounted to the steering wheel for manual control-essentially the same engine that was in the late G8 GXP. Out back is a fully independent suspension and a 3.27 final drive ratio. Estimated 0 to 60 mph is about five seconds, according to Chevy's claims. Based on what we know of the 2014 Chevelle, the quarter-mile should pass in the 13.4 or better range in the quarter-mile, putting its performance on par with or ahead of the sacred 2018 Chevelle. No top speed has been announced.
